Whatever you think of "Smokey and the Bandit" as a movie, there''s no denying that for a lot of guys of a certain age, this 1978 Pontiac Trans Am is pure awesomeness on wheels. Restored to the exact specifications as the movie car, plus a burly 455 cubic inch V8 to make it haul like the movie car, it''s a very cool tribute to the last of the real muscle cars. OK, we know the car used in the movie was a 1977, but this one nails the look in every way that matters. Better still, it''s a factory black car, so there was no color change needed to make it look right. There''s a huge amount of time and money tied up in this car''s build, and the shiny black paint is as good as we''ve ever seen on one of these cars. The many urethane body add-ons fit extremely well and all those ornate gold decals and matching plastic trim remain in first-class condition. We''re fairly certain that the 33,739 miles shown on the clock are authentic, so you know this was an ultra-clean car to start with. Fit and finish are worlds better than the factory could manage in 1978 and the decals were expertly applied so the lines are laser-straight and everything is in exactly the right place. Come on, you know you''re digging the look. The black interior is also how this car was ordered and matches the movie car, which is a happy coincidence. The low mileage is especially apparent here, because it all looks almost new, including the deeply bolstered bucket seats, carpets, and door panels. OK, the use of the gold trim here is a little over-the-top, but this was also the disco era and you probably couldn''t go over-the-top enough to make a difference to buyers in 1978. Regardless, details like the engine-turned dash applique, the three-spoke steering wheel, and console-mounted 8-track player are all period-perfect pieces of an awesome bit of nostalgia. This car''s loaded up with a ton of options, too, including A/C, power windows and locks, and a tilt steering column, so it does feel like Pontiac''s top-of-the-line when you''re behind the wheel. The only thing keeping it from being an exact Bandit replica is the lack of T-tops, but to be honest, you''re better off with this car because it doesn''t squeak, twist, rattle or leak. The engine is a burly 455 cubic inch V8, which delivers performance just like you''d always dreamed of when you were a kid. Based on a 1973 service replacement block with 4-bolt mains, it''s ready to go out and have some fun. A Holley 4-barrel carburetor handles the induction duties from underneath the hood scoop and correct Pontiac Turquoise engine paint makes it look highly correct to the average guy. It''s backed by a tough TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and 3.23 gears out back, so it''ll really stretch its legs on the highway. The underside features a very cool black-coated exhaust system with long-tube headers and an X-pipe, so the soundtrack is every bit as spectacular as the movie. It''s also fitted with gorgeous "snowflake" alloys and new 255/60/15 Goodyear Eagle radials that complete the ensemble. This car includes the original, numbers-matching 400 cubic inch V8 with the sale, so you can take it back to stock if you''d like. But we can almost guarantee that once you''ve tried this Bandit on for size, you won''t ever want to go back to driving an average car again. Call today!
