If you''re an enthusiast on a budget, it''s worth looking into this 1962 Chevrolet Impala sedan, which is proof that 4-doors can look great while they''re busy being practical. Great colors, a strong-running V8, and lots of luxury features make this one cool sedan. You can''t go wrong with black over red, so this Impala gets a big boost just by showing up dressed in formalwear. To be honest, it''s shocking that someone has obviously invested so much time and money in such an affordable car, and the quality is all out of proportion to the price. Tuxedo Black is this car''s original color (code 900) and it''s pretty easy to see why it was so insanely popular back in the day. All four doors fit nicely, the hood sits flush, and the car looks fantastic in black. It''s not perfect, of course, but for a car that costs less than $20,000, it''s pretty darned nice. The bright stainless trim with contrasting red insert makes the big Imp look dashing and sleek, while the hardtop roofline keeps the familial resemblance to the hardtop intact. Nice chrome bumpers and shiny stainless trim work with the argent silver insert on the tail, and, of course, the Impala wears its triple taillights, which have been tradition all along. Whomever ordered this car new in 1962 knew what he was doing, because he specified a code 874 bright red interior, which includes cloth inserts on the handsomely styled bench seats. Tufted door panels with bright buttons and strips of stainless trim give it an upscale look, which the top-of-the-line Impala has certainly earned. The interior is believed to be original to this magnificent car. It has a bit of patina that makes it feel inviting, supporting the claim of originality. The carpets are in good order thanks to heavy-duty black mats, although there''s a bit of fading that''s probably inevitable with red carpets. The sedan gets the same sporty steering wheel and wide gauge panel that the hardtops and convertibles received, so from behind the wheel there''s no way to tell how many doors you''re hauling around. Under-dash A/C is a period-correct accessory, and it''s now powered by modern components under the hood for improved reliability and easy service. There''s also a newer AM/FM stereo radio in the dash, but it fits so well, you don''t notice it immediately. And out back, there''s a cavernous trunk fitted with what appear to be original mats and a full-sized spare. There were a myriad of engine options in 1962, but this Impala cruises with a trusty small block V8. With 283 cubic inches, it''s smooth and torquey enough to make the sedan entertaining to drive. The odometer shows 81,189 miles, and we believe that to be authentic, so the engine has probably never been opened. It looks good wearing Chevy Orange paint with a bit of patina to it, and aside from the aftermarket A/C setup, it''s quite stock. A newer power brake booster and master cylinder improve safety, and it has obviously seen regular maintenance throughout the years. A 2-speed PowerGlide automatic transmission links to the original rear end, and while most 283s came with single exhaust, this one has been upgraded to a nice-sounding dual setup for a few extra horsepower. It''s as nice underneath as you''d expect from a survivor like this, and with recent 205/75/14 whitewalls on original wheels, it''s totally ready to cruise.
