One of the most collectible, historic, and instantly-recognizable sports cars ever conceived, this 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is one of just 1,858 examples built in all from 1957 through 1963 and it is one of only 324 produced for 1958. Highly detailed, it is simply resplendent in rarely seen DB 396 Medium Blue over blue leather and continues to benefit handsomely from over 25 years of single ownership in California and a restoration completed in 2008. This stunning automobile is fully documented in the 300 SL Registry.While derived from the 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe, itself based upon the first new post-war racing car built by Mercedes-Benz, the 300 SL Roadster was far more than a familial resemblance to its predecessors might suggest. Built around a revised and strengthened yet lightweight space-frame chassis, the 300 SL Roadster featured conventional-opening doors, a more pleasant ride and more forgiving handling characteristics, while retaining the sporting dynamics demanded by enthusiasts. A revised camshaft profile delivered additional power and performance, and the convertible top and associated mechanisms disappeared neatly beneath a hard cover when lowered. Coveted from new by the top names in the business, entertainment, political, and social spheres, the 300 SL Roadster continues to weave its magic today throughout today’s sports-car market.In 1994 Newport Beach California enthusiast Mike Tucci commissioned a “cost is no object” restoration to be done on his Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster. Over 270 receipts and detailed correspondence memorialize a meticulous 12 year project by Don Mertz Restorations (formerly of Scott Restorations) of Sun Valley California completed in the later portion of 2008.Hundreds of almost uncountable hours are recorded with sub-contract receipts of a thorough engine refurbishment by Ed Pink Racing Engines of Van Nuys California. Documents from late in 2007 detail the complete Magnaflux of block, crank flywheel and connecting rods with a complete balance of pistons, shot peen of connecting rods along with the individual balance of the full reciprocating assembly. Detailed inspection of the comprehensive receipt file clearly indicates the fastidious nature of the project including the full body off the chassis frame methodology, full bare metal media blasted body shell and complete body jig fabricated to facilitate the stunning result now on display.Since completion of the initial restoration, documents also track a diligent attention to detail with continued routine maintenance by Marx Mercedes Service of Costa Mesa California, through October 2013. In addition, as any discriminating buyer will expect of an automobile of this caliber, all “belly pans” are present, along with a complement of original Mercedes Benz owner’s manuals and a complementing tool roll.
