Description:

The R107 Mercedes-Benz SL has quietly been adding fans for the past few years, and today represents perhaps one of the smartest buys in the old car hobby. This end-of-the-line 1986 560SL is probably the one to own, with an unusual color combination, full service records, and the most powerful V8 fitted to the series. The look was born back in the early ''70s, but like all things of quality, it never seems to go out of style. Looking very bright and tropical in turquoise, this 560SL looks far more sporty than many of its conservative siblings. The paint is good, which shows you what you got for $50,000 of your 1986 dollars, and with a subtle gray pinstripe, it really stands out. As you''d expect, fit and finish are exemplary with an undeniable feel of precision in every part you touch. Grab the door handles and the doors swing open like they''re on ball bearings, the gaps are tight, and if there was ever a car that exemplified Mercedes-Benz''s motto "The best or nothing," this might be it. Chrome wheel arch moldings were added at some point and they do add some flash to the already high-profile little roadster, and the gold 3-pointed star up front certainly adds the appeal, and that''s what these cars are about. The rubber is in good shape, including the heavy bumpers front and rear, indicative of a car that hasn''t been allowed to bake in the sun. The gray leather interior is a rather rare choice, but an excellent complement to the turquoise paint. Cool and sophisticated, it''s first-class travel even if you''re just running up to the corner store. The materials are of the highest quality, of course, including plush carpets that feel sinful even through your shoes, real wood on the center console, and leather that stands up to the passage of the years without getting dry and brittle. The instrument panel is the same one that carried throughout the R107''s production, and the gated shifter will feel like an old friend to anyone who has driven a Mercedes in the past 30 years. The original radio has been, replaced by an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit that improves the sound significantly. All SLs came standard with two tops, a color-matched hard top and a folding canvas top underneath, and in this car''s case, the black convertible top is brand new. Even the carpet is fully lined and beautifully finished. The reason you want a 560SL is the engine, a 5.6-liter SOHC V8 that made a robust 227 horsepower and 287 pounds of torque, and it runs even better than those figures would suggest. Renowned for impeccable reliability, it always pays to buy the best SL you can afford, because it''s false economy to think a cheap one will save you money. Thanks to this one''s full service records, you know it''s been properly maintained and is in peak health, and given the durability of these cars, with just 80,705 miles on the clock, this one''s just getting broken-in. The 4-speed automatic wakes up when you need to hustle and you''ll find that combined with the supple yet capable suspension, it really feels right. Flashy chrome alloys really set off the turquoise paint and wear recent 205/65/15 Michelin radials. At this price, in this condition, with these colors, this SL is not going to last long at all.
