The recipe is simple: take one vintage Mustang, add a big block V8, and dress it in bright red paint. In reality, the application of the recipe is somewhat more challenging, but this 1968 Mustang coupe absolutely nails it. So it started out as a six-cylinder snoozer, who cares? This pony isn''t about investments and numbers-chasing, it''s about traditional Mustang performance. And a big part of that appeal is making one of the greatest designs of all time into something that makes people stop in their tracks. This sizzling red Mustang is arguably over-restored-no 1968 Mustang ever had paint this shiny on the showroom floor. Look closely and you''ll find a few custom details, like the Shelby-style quarter panel scoops and a chin spoiler, but for the most part they wisely let the original shape speak for itself, and it speaks beautifully. Gaps are excellent, the panels are straight, and there aren''t many Americans who can''t imagine themselves behind the wheel of this coupe. Chrome and stainless is quite good, giving this coupe a high-quality look that isn''t just an illusion. The subtle custom look inside is a result of blending brand new black buckets with bright red floor mats and a custom console, so you aren''t quite sure where the original stuff ends and the modern upgrades begin. Most of the soft components are new, including the seats and carpets (which are black underneath those mats), while the door panels appear to be nicely preserved originals. This car also sports a very rare factory overhead console, which is a neat feature, and there''s a brand new Hurst shifter and linkage atop the 4-speed manual gearbox. The original gauges are framed by a wood-rimmed Grant GT steering wheel atop the original column, and a JVC AM/FM/CD stereo has been very neatly nestled into the original dash. And one glance in the trunk is a great indicator of just how much work went into the build. The 200 cubic inch inline-six is long gone, replaced by a thundering 390 cubic inch V8, an engine for which the ''67-68 Mustangs were specifically designed to carry. Rebuilt just 250 miles ago and equipped with 428 Cobra Jet heads for better breathing, the car delivers on the performance promises made by the brilliant red paint. An aluminum intake is topped by a Holley 750 CFM carburetor, all framed by a pair of chrome valve covers. It''s a tight fit in the Mustang''s engine bay, but it looks awesome with Ford Blue paint, a new aluminum radiator, fan, wiring harness, and alternator. A correct 4-speed replaces the original automatic and uses a new Hurst linkage, and a rugged 9-inch rear is up to the job. The front control arms and ball joints were recently replaced so it tracks straight and period Keystone wheels look right and carry 215/70/15 front and 245/60/15 rear BFGoodrich radials. This is the Mustang you''ve been dreaming about since you were nine years old. Go ahead, it''s time. Give us a call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom.
