Description:

Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale June 19th – 21st, 2014 at Russo and Steele''s 2nd Annual Newport Beach California Auction. Please contact us for more information. The muscle car wars were at their pinnacle by 1970. In Detroit, the factory credo “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” was critical to support their respective dealers, as successes on the drag strips or stock car tracks brought in admiring fans who wanted to purchase the same type of performance packages they could drive to work and play. In response to the 426 ‘Hemi’ and 440 Wedges from Dodge and Plymouth, plus the 427s stuffed into Ford and Mercury products, Chevrolet responded with a vengeance, moving up with the 454 LS6. Here was a factory rating at 450 horsepower developed with the aid of 11.25:1 compression. It was engineered to take the added power with a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods. Four-bolt main bearing caps, forged aluminum pistons, and deep-groove accessory pulleys were also part of the LS6 package. The enthusiast magazines and competing racers of the day thought the 450-hp rating was underestimated to take advantage of the Super Stock wars being waged at the drag strips across the USA. Imagine going to your local Chevy dealer and checking an option box for the LS6 Chevelle with its monstrous performance coming from 450 underrated horsepower! The original owner of this magnificent Cortez Silver LS6 Chevelle 2-door hardtop was not shy about checking option boxes, as it was equipped with some rare features. In addition to the behemoth big-block 454 LS6 with the highest 450-horsepower rating features include an M-22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed manual transmission. Cowl Induction, functional hood lock pins, plus hood and deck stripes were part of the LS6 package as well. To complete the beefy drive-train, a 12-bolt rear axle, Chevy’s strongest, is equipped with a 3.73:1 ratio. Optional power front disc brakes, power steering, and tilt wheel were other factory options. Inside, black vinyl Strato-Bucket front seats flank the floor console. The dash is fully equipped with factory tach and gauges, along with a factory-installed AM/FM radio. This SS454 is also one of very few equipped with the rare rear-window defogger option. A full body-off restoration was completed less than 400 miles ago, and this legendary musclecar car awaits the opportunity to give a hard run to match the 0-60 mph in 6 seconds and 13-second quarter mile times written in the magazine tests. With only 4,475 LS6-equipped SS454s ever produced, this highly desirable example, with matching numbers authenticated by an independent source (a copy of the report will be available for review on-site), is equally ready for “go” and “show.”
