Description:

Is it a gonzo performance car, the likes of which Car & Driver magazine said was akin to "motorized sneakers"? Or is it a sophisticated performance piece with a gorgeous interior, creature comforts like A/C and a powerful stereo? Well, why can''t it be both? The Porsche Speedster is one of the most iconic designs ever created, but when enhanced with flared fenders like this, it looks like something ferocious and downright predatory. It seems fitting then, that this one has been beautifully fitted, sanded, and smoothed before being covered with deep, glossy Jaguar charcoal gray metallic paint. Red would have been too flashy on that steroid-infused bodywork, and silver has been done to death. No, the deep, rich, subtle charcoal gray stands out like a Brooks Brothers suit on a linebacker - it doesn''t need flash to make a point. All the delicate Speedster details remain, however, including the nerf bumpers, the simple grilles below the headlamps, and the dramatic swept-back side mirrors that look like miniature works of art. Elemental and sparse, the Speedster''s interior is nonetheless beautifully finished using top-grade materials. The natural brown leather is a strikingly sophisticated complement to the dark gray paint, and the dark piping suggests coachbuilder artisans were behind the design. Accurate reproduction gauges have been fitted to faithfully re-create the Speedster experience, and they''re shrouded under a stitched leather hood. The steering wheel is a throwback to the days of string-backed driving gloves, and the carpets are authentic German square-weave. Beautifully crafted door panels feature map pockets and powerful speakers for the Kenwood AM/FM/iPod stereo, which also powers a subwoofer that fills the little car with sound. Shockingly, this Speedster is also fitted with a powerful A/C system, one of the only such vehicles we''ve ever seen so equipped. The top is snug-fitting, and it seals up reasonably well with the included side curtains. Of course, you can''t build a car that looks like this and not pack it with as much horsepower as it will carry. In this case, it''s a custom-built VW flat-four, which, at 2110 cc, probably counts as a big block in the land of the air-cooled. Fed by a pair of high-flow carburetors and exhaling through a very trick dual exhaust system, it sounds amazing and moves the flyweight Speedster with astonishing vigor. The suspension has been lowered and fitted with high-performance shocks and struts, and there''s a fat sway bar up front that keeps it planted. Front-wheel discs manage the stopping, and if you look around while you''re under there, you''ll notice two massive A/C condensers neatly tucked into the space ahead of the engine, as well as a big oil cooler which helps the muscle-bound engine keep its cool under all conditions. Polished 17-inch alloy wheels wear Porsche center caps, as well as sticky low-profile radials. If you want the ultimate Speedster, you''ve just found it. Elegant, fast, and beautifully built, it''s more of everything that makes Speedsters so awesome. Call today. This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
