There are still affordable ways to have fun in the sun this summer, and this 1969 Ford Galaxie XL convertible is a great example. Big block V8 power, lots of luxury features, and room for the whole family make this a great choice if your goal is a fun old car with a top that goes down. You already know this isn''t a show car, but it does look great going down the road. It might have been repainted once a long time ago, so it has a great all-of-a-piece look where nothing is too old or too new, and on an old ragtop, that shows up as character rather than wear. Bright red is never a mistake on a car with a folding top, and showing up in a full-sized luxury sled like this is always an event. It doesn''t look to have been neglected or abused, instead living its life as a fun car that always had a safe spot in the garage to spend its off hours. Ford made their top-of-the-line cars look similar to their cousins at Lincoln, with folding headlights, plenty of chrome, and a gothic look that works rather well. Those folding headlights are fully functional and while most of the chrome is original, it shines up pretty well and looks great against the bright red paint. In the ''60s, bench seats were luxurious ways to bring everyone with you, and there''s expansive space inside this Galaxie. White upholstery keeps it bright and comfortable in the sun, with black carpets and a matching dash to keep it from behind overwhelming, and it''s all low-maintenance stuff. The seats themselves are in good shape with no rips or tears, although you have to bear in mind that this stuff is 45 years old now, so it''s not perfect. But that also means you won''t sweat the little stuff and having fun is pretty painless when you don''t have to fret about the sun or a few drops of rain. Cruising is made easy with power options included brakes, steering and top, and even the factory A/C offers a stream of cool air on a hot day. The original AM radio still does its thing and there''s a white power convertible top with a glass rear window that stows under a matching white vinyl boot. For road trips, this full-size Galaxie''s massive trunk will handle all your gear and includes a full-sized spare and jack assembly. With 390 cubic inches under the hood, this big car moves like a much smaller machine. Thanks to a brand new Flowmaster exhaust system, it sounds suitably muscular, with a great burble at idle and a pleasant hum on the highway. The engine bay has obviously been very well maintained, and there''s a big 4-barrel carburetor atop an Edelbrock intake to keep it fed. The chrome air cleaner and valve covers look great and wear reproduction decals. A 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission makes cruising effortless and with 235/75/15 whitewall radials on original wheels with hubcaps it looks right floating down the highway. You probably won''t find more top-down sheetmetal than this for the money, so if you''re not expecting perfection and just want to own an unusual old ragtop, this big Galaxie might not be a bad choice.
