You''ve seen the cars in magazines and figured that the guys who own them have everything figured out and have the money to make their dreams come true. Well, this 1997 Pontiac Trans Am is definitely one of those cars, featured in an article in "High Performance Pontiac" magazine simply because it does everything well. When the face-lifted 1998 Trans Am was revealed, the gentleman who built this amazing T/A decided to find one of the last of the ''97s simply because he liked how they looked. I''m inclined to agree with him, and the subtle additions he''s made to this car only enhance what was already a pretty distinctive package. The silver bodywork is almost entirely original save for the trick Suncoast Creations twin-snorkel hood, which force-feeds the stroker motor underneath. Of course, being a Trans Am, it was the perfect opportunity to dress it up, so a custom Firebird graphic was sketched out and created just for this car, then expertly installed atop the PPG silver paint on the hood, making for a look that causes a lot of double-takes, even among Pontiac fans. The only other mod is a set of black Trans Am emblems that stand out a little more against the paint. And, of course, as a car that pretty much lived in the garage except for going to shows, it''s in extremely good condition throughout with only very, very minor signs of use, even with 68,490 original miles showing on the clock. This car came loaded from the factory, which was a big part of its appeal before the mechanical upgrades took place. Charcoal gray leather buckets anchor the interior and it''s obvious that someone has been extra careful with them since it was new. There''s only minor wear on the seat cushions and none of the usual wear on the outer bolsters that''s typical of cars like this. In fact, just about every interior surface is very nicely preserved and the overall look is quite stock. It''ll take an expert to spot the Pro 5.0 shifter with a Lou''s Short Stick handle, silver-faced instruments, and shift light on the steering column. Hidden from sight are trick controls like the front line-lock and two-step launch control hidden in the ashtray. And, of course, all the factory options are fully functional, including the A/C, power windows and locks, and great-sounding Monsoon stereo system that''s been augmented with a Kenwood amp and 10-inch subwoofer. But the real reason this car got all that magazine ink is under that sweet hood. A stout 383 cubic inch stroker motor cranks out a dyno-verified 401 horsepower and 405 pounds of torque at the wheels. With a host of tweaks, including polished aluminum heads, a big GM 847 roller cam, and upgraded fuel injection system, it runs beautifully and remains insanely fast, even more than 15 years later. It''s obviously quite reliable, having covered nearly 66,000 miles since the current owner bought it, and with a few well-chosen suspension tweaks, it remains potent on the street. The T56 6-speed manual was rebuilt and feeds a custom driveshaft and Moser 12-bolt rear with 3.73 gears on an Eaton Posi. Heavy-duty suspension components help get the power planted and it wears handsome Enkei Win wheels with 275/40/17 radials in front and 315/35/17 rear Mickey Thompson drag radials. Extremely fast, totally sorted, and quite attractive, this Trans AM is a ton of modern horsepower that''s still going to be a threat today. Call now for all the details!
