Description:

Stuffing a small block into a Vega is such a neat trick that we''re shocked the factory didn''t do it first. Sadly, they went the Cosworth route, leaving enthusiasts to build their own versions of Chevy''s ''70s compact like this bright yellow 1972 example. Shockingly fast and a ton of fun on the road, this little yellow screamer will be more than a handful for its F-body siblings. First off, finding a Vega in good condition is a tall order. Since they tended to rust sitting on the showroom floor, they don''t have a very high survival rate. However, this one was stashed away someplace warm all its life, so it made the perfect foundation for this build. If you squint, it kind of looks like a 7/8 scale Camaro, especially with the chin and deck lid spoilers, which make the Vega look aggressive enough to live up to the rumble from its exhaust. Of course, bright yellow paint and a black stripe down its back certainly help with the "don''t mess with me" attitude and if you can get it to stop for a moment, you''ll find that it actually fits together quite well with good gaps and doors that feel solid when you pull them closed. The Camaro look continues up front with a big blacked-out grille flanked by bumperettes like a second-gen RS, and four taillights out back is surely meant to recall other great Chevys of the past. Inside, this mini muscle car is for real, with high-back buckets that have quilted fabric inserts to make them both grippy and stylish. The steering wheel will look familiar to Camaro owners, and while the wood veneer on the dash looks like it came out of your dad''s basement rec room, there''s a full array of useful gauges, including a factory tach that''s been converted to work with the V8 under the hood. An AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit has been retrofitted to the dash and sounds quite good, but you''ll probably prefer the soundtrack coming from the twin tailpipes anyway. There''s also an interesting center console with the shifter for the TH350 3-speed automatic, and it''s cool to see that they''ve pretty much preserved the factory look throughout the interior without giving anything away about its performance potential. The hatchback is a feature that early Camaro owners would probably appreciate, with plenty of room for tools, race gear, and other stuff you''ll need for a day of fun with your car. The big story, of course, is the 350 cubic inch V8 under the hood. It''s a tight fit, but it''s in there without any significant sheetmetal alterations, making for one stealthy compact. A few chrome dress up bits will make onlookers take a closer look and thanks to a set of block-hugging cast iron manifolds, the dual exhaust system not only sounds good, but works to build horsepower, too. An electric fan on the radiator is probably mandatory given the space constraints, but service access throughout is actually quite good. Underneath, you''ll be shocked how rust-free this Vega truly is, and behind the TH350 there''s a 10-bolt rear hanging on a stock Vega suspension that actually works pretty well. Flashy chrome wheels look great and wear modestly-sized 13-inch BFGs that look a lot bigger on the small Vega. A neat little sleeper with a lot of charm and a giant-slayer attitude. Call today!
