The W116 450 SEL was first revealed in 6.9 litre form at theGeneva Auto Salon in 1974 - a highly qualified successor toMercedes-Benz''s original high-performance sedan, the 300SEL 6.3.Production of this ''flagship'' model was and very limited and wasthe first Mercedes-Benz ever to be fitted with a self-adjustinghydro-pneumati,c self-levelling suspension system with anadjustable ride height switch in the dashboard. Additionally thismodel featured the three-speed automatic transmission unique to the6.9 and a standard ZF limited slip differential both for enhancedroad holding performance in the dry and enhanced traction ininclement weather. The cast iron 6.9 Litre V8 engine was good for140mph and would propel this Goliath from start to 60mph in just7.0 Seconds. Combining sumptuous refinement and renownedengineering with such agility and speed this scarce model achieved4th position in a poll conducted by Classic & Sports Carmagazine and printed in their April 1999 edition, ranking  the ''world''s greatest'' ever saloons. The current owner has lavished much time and investment in theupkeep of this striking example across more than ten years ofownership. In this time, the Goodwood Road Racing Club have usedthe vehicle annually as a VIP shuttle during Goodwood Revival andMercedes-Benz World also commissioned this vehicle for staticshowroom displays at their Brooklands UK Headquarters. Finished inmetallic blue with cream leather interior, the car is well equippedwith electric windows and steel sunroof. Infrequently used andalways dry stored, the 6.9 litre motor pulls strongly. Transmissionis smooth and kick-down operates purposely without fuss. The discs, pads and callipers have been replaced in recent times so the brakesfeel perfectly adequate to deal with the power and weight of thiscar. The history file contains old MoT test certificates and manyreceipts relating to upkeep across the years including bills fromMercedes-Benz franchised dealers and specialists such as SS Motorsof Weybridge. The car will be presented to the auction with a new12 Month MoT test certificate and represents a handsome, capableand most desirable derivative of the W116 family in show-readycondition, this model should represent a good investmentopportunity for the next owner.
