Longing for a Shelby GT500 KR convertible but those pesky guys at Ford won''t build you one? Your prayers are answered in the form of this sinister black and red ragtop that has been professionally upgraded with a full KR body kit, some supercharged horsepower under the hood, and a gorgeous red leather interior that invites you to go out and kick some asphalt. The KR was more than just more engine stuffed into a GT500, it got its own front bumper, fenders, hood, and rear fascia, along with a subtle rear wing. This car has all the right equipment expertly installed and finished in a deep, lustrous black that stands out in terms of shine and quality of the finish. Park this one next to a stock black Mustang GT, and you may find that the stock car looks gray instead of black. The aggressive chin spoiler force feeds air to the hot components under the hood and behind the wheels, because the KR was designed to push boundaries. And there''s just no mistaking the wide nostrils in that KR hood, designed to emulate the GT500 KR of 1968, which was the meanest, nastiest snake Ol'' Shel could come up with at the time. Just between you and me, however, this one will eat the original''s lunch every day of the week. There''s no better color combination than red with a black body, and the leather in this KR tribute is simply spectacular. Obviously the factory did their homework when looking into what buyers wanted, and the result is a very handsome interior with a retro feel that really works. It''s also highly functional, with legible gauges using a 1967-era font, sculpted buckets for aggressive driving, and powerful HVAC and Shaker entertainment systems. The leather has a comfortable look that is worn in, not worn out, with no splits or dryness, suggesting that someone took very good care of it. Overhead a light bar has been added, while a power black convertible top seals up tightly with just the touch of a button. The Mustang GT''s 4.6 liter 3-valve V8 didn''t escape the transformation, either. While the KRs received an upgraded roots-type blower, this one now wears a whistling Vortech centrifugal supercharger that makes boost in proportion to engine speed. That is, the faster you go, the more power it makes. Responsive and with a very distinctive sound that can be quite threatening, this reinforced engine now makes an estimated 450 horsepower, and easily incinerates the rear tires at will. With a willing 5-speed manual transmission, it powers through the gears with a feeling that you''re just barely in control of something very powerful. Fortunately, massive disc brakes at all four corners keep it in check, and black Ford Racing alloys wear sticky 18-inch BFGoodrich rubber. Priced a KR lately? Or even a new GT? This car offers twice the thrills at half the price, and looks virtually identical. That''s a tribute, that''s smart buying. This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom.
