Whether it’s for revolutionary engineering or a lead roll on screen, certain cars rise to levels of fame that could rival even the most celebrated A-listers. The 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM SE is definitely one of those cars thanks to a generation raised on Smokey and the Bandit. This example is genuine Y82 SE car which has been driven just 18,320 actual miles. With immediately recognizable aesthetics and its original 400/4-speed combination in place, this is Pontiac’s Trans Am at its best. The car began life at GM’s Norwood, Ohio assembly line, heading to Alpine Motors Corp in Brooklyn, NY after completion. The original owner paid the sum of $7,550.92 in full and the car’s pampered limited-mileage life began. This T/A remains largely unrestored but did undergo an exterior repaint in September of 2013 to keep the finish on par with the rest of the car. From the shaker-style hood and Hurst T-tops to the gold outlining and German lettering, all of the proper Trans Am styling cues combine to form one of those most celebrated looks of the era. Between the doors, a largely original tan interior incorporates offers a great place to log miles from. The Special Edition package brought gold accents into the space, mainly in the form of the engine-turned instrument bezel and three-spoke steering wheel. The carpets look great for their age and the bucket seats definitely reflect how little road time the car has seen. A tapered center console offers access to the 4-speed below as well as controls for the power windows. Other amenities include, tilt steering, power locks, and the original radio. As the “T/A 6.6” shaker scoop decal hints at, there’s Pontiac power under the hood. The car carries its original L78 400ci V8 – one of the largest muscle car mills of its day. That original block is topped by 6X high-compression heads, a stock intake manifold, and a single 800cfm Rochester Quadrajet. As a product of the late 1970s, compression was only 8.0:1 in stock form but that still translated to 325lb-ft of torque at a mere 2,200rpm. With just over 18,000 miles on the clock, the engine not only presents as new – it practically is new. From correct decals and hoses to factory-given finishes, everything here shows with authority. Underneath this Trans Am, the clean undercarriage is comprised of solid floorpans and plenty of PMD hardware. In the center, a four-speed manual spins power back to a GM 10-bolt rear axle with 3.23 posi. Suspension consists of an independent front, a leaf spring rear, and heavy duty shocks at all four corners. Paired with variable-ratio power steering and power disc brakes, this is a surprisingly nimble car. At the corners, classic gold snowflake-design wheels connect the chassis to the road. The sale of this Trans Am includes its original build sheet, window sticker, dealer paperwork, books, manuals, receipts, and a detailed owner history.
