Authentic 1949 Mercury M-68 1-Ton Long Bed Pickup Truck. Heavy duty 1-ton (6800 GVW) is powered by the 239ci 3.9L Flathead V8, mated to the rugged 4-speed manual transmission. This vintage M-Series Mercury had been virtually locked up and forgotten for a quarter century or more until its recent restoration in 2011. The restorer was one that obviously valued authenticity, originality and above all else, cosmetic perfection. Attention was paid to every detail, as demonstrated by the correct working tube-type radio and heater. He reportedly spent 5-years of time, and over $75,000 just in restoration costs. The Mercury line of pickup trucks were originally factory rebadged variations of Ford branded pickup trucks; these upscaled Mercury models often came equipped from the factory with better interior and exterior appointments, and options. In many restored M-68 examples found on the market today, it is common to find a Ford truck rebadged and restored as a Mercury. That is not the case here; this is a rare original Mercury M-68. The entire frame, motor, cab, hood, truck bed, running boards, rear-end, spare tire, carriage and jack, transmission and all stainless steel and chrome trim parts are all original to this truck. This was a meticulous and complete rotisserie restoration with absolutely nothing spared or left untouched. The gleaming mirror-finished chrome, and bright work, and near spotless two-tone paint work in Baniff Green and Black. And 1949 was the only year Baniff Green was offered as a factory color choice. Special attention was paid to the unique Mercury specific grille, correct badging and trim that would have adorned every Mercury M-68 pickup truck in 1949. The solid oak decking and stake sides finish off the absolutely stunning presentation of this one of a kind restoration. This showroom piece took a hands-down 1st place during our most recent ICC regional car show. One patron said of the restoration quality it should be put in a glass case, and admired for a hundred years. The most amazing fact of our M-68 is that since the restoration was completed, this truck has not been driven other than on and off the vehicle hauler; therefore the purchaser of this rare beauty will be the first to cruise around in it!
