If you think the Mustang GTA is special, prepare to meet its big brother, the 1967 Fairlane GTA. Packing a snarling 289 cubic inch V8 and an automatic transmission (the "A" part of GTA), as well as a top that goes down, this is a rare piece of Ford muscle. Restored in the late-90s, this GTA is still a great-looking ragtop. Vivid red is definitely not stealthy but it looks awesome on the Fairlane. With a more grown-up look than the Mustang, this Fairlane is a great study in contrasts, and the bright white pinstripe accentuates the subtle kick-up behind the doors that often goes unnoticed on darker colors. Stacked headlights, the original steel hood, and GTA stripes along the rockers all work together to give this Fairlane a sporty look with a touch of formality. The paint and bodywork is a bit older and shows a few signs of use, of course, but showing up in this car still generates a lot of attention on the street and at shows. It''s been touched up as necessary to keep it looking sharp and the chrome still shines brightly, so no worries about hitting some local shows. Other equipment includes GT and GTA badging, a blacked-out grille, and Ford''s favorite jet-inspired taillights that were a Fairlane trademark for years. The tan interior was restored just two years ago and still looks very fresh. Comfortable buckets flanking a center console, and the light-colored interior is a great choice in an open car that''s going to spend some time in the sun. Black carpets match the dash pad, and the new door panels look right and show quite well. The three-spoke steering wheel isn''t quite stock but looks right in a vintage performance car, and the gauges cover the basics of speed and fuel level. It''s also kind of nice to see the original AM radio living in the dash, suggesting that this car has always been a fairly original piece that hasn''t been extensively modified by previous owners. The black top is power-actuated and a tan boot was created when the rest of the interior was refinished, so it''s all the same color. The trunk is also correctly restored with a correct mat and carries a full-sized spare tire. Although originally and s-code 390 from the factory, the original powerplant was long ago replaced out of necessity, and a 289 was put in place. The standard engine on all GTAs, Fairlanes and Mustangs alike, was a 289 cubic inch V8, which was a great performer in both platforms, and we think you''ll find this one will do quite nicely. Two years ago, the entire powertrain was restored, which explains the nicely detailed engine bay, correct Ford Blue paint, a factory air cleaner with reproduction decals. A new dual exhaust system gives it the right engine note that burbles away happily behind you while you''re driving, and, of course, the requisite C4 3-speed automatic transmission is quick-witted and ready to have fun. 3.25 gears make for an entertaining experience on the road, and with air shocks out back you can fill the back seat with friends without bottoming out. Handsome styled steel wheels were a Ford performance look for several years, and they wear modern 215/70/14 white-letter radials. So if you''ve outgrown your Mustang, this Fairlane GTA provides a more grown-up alternative with plenty of room for friends. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
