The all-new Fords in 1949 probably saved the company, but this 1951 Victoria proves that they also advanced the state-of-the-art. Beautifully restored and treated to a few smart performance upgrades, it''s a fantastic fifties flathead that''s ready to drive. Even though it was a volume car and priced to sell, the 1951 Ford Victoria looks like a much more expensive machine. Lots of work went into this restoration, but it retains its period look, particularly with the accessory exterior sun visor. The two-tone paint, which is correct Glacier Blue with a Silverstone Gray top, looks fantastic rendered in modern paint, making it look far shinier and upscale than was possible in 1951. The clean, smooth flanks of the car could easily be boring, but the shape was ground-breaking at the time, ushering in the modern era with hood and fenders neatly integrated into a single line. Lots of chrome and stainless, particularly the heavy front bumper and grille, definitely added to the 1950s appeal and gave the car an upscale look. All of the bright work is shiny, fresh, and nicely maintained, particularly the grille and trademark rear quarter trim that leads to the taillights, a Ford styling feature for years. The understated interior is comfortable and ready to hit the highway, with cloth and vinyl in the original patterns. The wide front bench shows few signs of use, only some very minor stretching on the driver''s side. The door panels were upholstered to match, with a nice combination of the exterior paints on the window sill and a stylish slash of chrome. Instrumentation is complete, with a big speedometer front and center with auxiliary dials and controls in a mesh-like insert that covers most of the dash, and please take a moment to note the cool round indicator needle on the speedo itself. Auxiliary gauges under the dash keep an eye on the temperature and oil pressure, and there''s an AM/FM/CD stereo hidden in the glove box, so the original radio can remain in the dash where it belongs. Three-on-the-three shifting retains a period feel, so getting behind the wheel delivers an authentic experience. The trunk is quite sizable, and features a correct rubber mat and full-sized spare tire. Traditional power comes from a fully-dressed 239 inch flathead V8. Period speed parts give it the punch of a modern machine with that distinctive V8 sound coming from the twin pipes out back. Edelbrock finned heads, a shiny polished aluminum intake, and a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor make for a big improvement in breathing, while a modern Pertronix ignition system lights the fires. Lots of chrome and bright red paint make it an engine bay you''ll enjoy showing off, ranging from the 12-volt alternator to the shiny brass radiator up front. Headers feed a dual exhaust system with just a pair of glasspack mufflers, so it barks and cackles in proper flathead fashion. The undercarriage isn''t detailed, but it has a layer of undercoating that keeps it neat, and with air shocks out back, you can carry friends and their gear without hammering the rear bumper on driveways. Stock wheels with spinner hubcaps and BFGoodrich wide whitewall radials complete the 1950s look. A fun and surprisingly capable old Ford with a great sound and a vintage feel. What could be better?
