1957 was a very big year for the automotive industry, but if you''re looking for something a bit more stylish and substantial than a garden-variety Chevy, this Buick Super Riviera will surely fit the bill. Riviera was Buick''s name for the hardtop, and it delivers big car horsepower with a spacious interior that''s got a lot of style. Paint code CN indicates Dover White over Garnet Red, and this Riv shows the correct combination that breaks at the "sweep spear" molding. Styling was an evolution of the ''56s but there''s no denying the familial GM resemblance nor the fact that this is a Buick. Restored in 2003, it still looks incredible in person with all the wonderful ''50s details that you''d expect from GM''s finest. The Super Riviera features a dramatic wrap-around rear window that was a unique styling element, as there were two different rear window treatments depending on the series, and cars with the single-piece rear window like this one are considerably rarer today. All the chrome was recently restored, a daunting financial investment on a big car like this, but one that has paid off with glittering brightwork, including that fine-toothed grille up front, the massive bumper ends, and the beautiful fluted taillight assemblies. And yes, there are portholes with four denoting that this is a Super, not the low-end Special. There''s more high style inside with a gorgeous two-tone interior that''s correct and matches the exterior paint job perfectly. It is a factory-correct combination and wears sparkling brocade fabric that is pure 1950s kitsch and yet looks suitably upscale for the senior Buick. Simple door panels combine the fabric and vinyl materials to great effect, and the carpets are brand new, accurately duplicating the original brick red color. However, this is a very well-preserved car and it''s worth noting that the headliner is original. The two-tiered dash is all about the visuals, with engine-turned panels, chrome-rimmed gauges, and a massive steering wheel with chrome horn ring. Buick''s Sonomatic AM radio remains in the dash, and this car is effortless to drive thanks to power steering and brakes (can you imagine such a beast without them?). The trunk is big enough to house a family of six and includes a correct reproduction mat and full-sized spare. Buick''s famous "Nailhead" V8 displaced 364 cubic inches in the Super Riviera and made a nice, round 300 horsepower thanks to a 4-barrel carburetor up top. Famous for making big torque, this rebuilt Nailhead moves the big coupe effortlessly and on the road feels more like a muscle car than a luxury cruiser. All Buicks were 12-volts by 1957 and it is equipped with a correct rebuilt generator and fresh battery, as well as the original air cleaner. It''s backed by the famous Dynaflow automatic transmission, whose seamless shifts will feel odd until you realize you''re going 75 MPH and the engine is just loafing along. Buick''s characteristic over-built chassis looks like it belongs under a locomotive instead of a passenger car, and the ride is as smooth as you''d expect. Factory steel wheels wear full wheelcovers and recent 235/75/15 whitewall radials. Documented with a few interesting bits of Buick memorabilia, this Super Riviera is a gorgeous, roadworthy alternative to the usual ''50s icons at a much more attractive price. Call today!
