Description:

Sometimes you find cool in the least likely places. Take this swoopy 1968 Buick LeSabre hardtop sedan, for example. Easy to dismiss at first, but then you have a closer look and notice the lowered stance, the ultra-slick ostrich-skin interior, and the thundering stereo system. Oh, and that black paint looks like it cost about a zillion bucks, too. You have to remember that back in the 1960s, Buicks were badass, and that''s why your grandfather drove one in the ''90s. They had top stylists designing their cars that were not as fluffy as Cadillacs and not as utilitarian as Oldsmobiles. Instead, they had a ton of style and understated cool that was quite appealing to guys who had arrived, but just didn''t feel like showing it off. The black paint on this LeSabre emphasizes both its length and the dramatic kick-up in the middle of the back doors, a Buick styling cue that dates back to just before the war. Fit and finish, particularly with four doors and a pillarless hardtop body, are excellent and when you show up in this car, expect to get a lot of questions and have a lot of people whipping out their cameras for a shot. There''s just enough chrome to remind everyone that this was not an inexpensive car when it was new, and the vinyl top only adds to that impression. Clearly a great deal of time and money went into the interior, which shows off the work of a master craftsman. It seamlessly blends the original design with modern materials and a stereo system that will rival that of your local IMAX movie theater, all so beautifully installed that you won''t be able to find where the factory work ends and the custom stuff begins. The seats, dash, door panels, headliner, and rear package shelf are all lined in black ostrich skin upholstery that''s soft and supple. New carpets, plenty of sound deadening materials, and all the original handles make it an outstanding place to spend some time. The JVC stereo is impressive, with a variety of speakers throughout the interior, plus a big enclosure in the trunk to deliver competition-grade entertainment. There''s also factory A/C converted to R134a refrigerant, a custom billet wheel, and clear original gauges that look way too good to be 45 years old. Buick''s bulletproof 350 cubic inch V8 provides motive power, and as a Buick, it''s designed for torque. The result is a sporty feel but plenty of performance. The bright Dante Red engine is quite well done, with an Edelbrock carb up top and rumbling Flowmasters underneath, but beyond that, it''s pretty stock. This not only ensures reliability, but proves that Buicks already had it going on and there''s just no need to go nuts with modifications. It''s backed by a heavy-duty TH400 3-speed automatic and 12-bolt rear end (this is a big, heavy luxury car, after all), and it all works together to make driving this big Buick effortless. The suspension has been lowered just enough to give it a bit of attitude, and those big 16-inch chrome wire wheels with 215/60/16 Uniroyal radials fill the fenders perfectly. Audiophiles in particular should take a good, long look at this LeSabre. It has the look, the sound, and the system to make it a show-stopper everywhere it goes. Call today!
