The Porsche 911 turns 50 this year, and regardless of whether you''re an air-cooled guy or a liquid-cooled fan, you have to admit that no other vehicle in history has been so single-mindedly awesome for so long. This 2010 911S Cabriolet is a fantastic way to celebrate, offering a lengthy list of options (you know how expensive those can be), classic 911 styling, and performance that''s unmatched by virtually anything else on the street. Oh, and you can drive it to work every day, because the 911 is also the world''s most reliable supercar. With an MSRP of over $114,000, the S is definitely not an inexpensive car, but it''s also one of those rare cases where you get exactly what you pay for. Build quality is every bit as good as the best from Mercedes-Benz or even Rolls-Royce, with typical German attention to precision. Cloaking it in black helps it keep a low profile-do you really want to be the middle-aged guy in a bright yellow 911-and looks fast just sitting still. I suppose if you take a magnifying glass, you might be able to find a flaw, but the paint is so smooth, so crystal clear, and so beautifully applied that I think you''ll probably get distracted before you find it. Traditional round headlights, a smooth tail with retractable spoiler, and LED taillights help make it instantly identifiable from a quarter-mile away, perhaps the last production car to be able to make that claim. The interior is, of course, a pure driver''s environment. You can argue that the 911 has gotten soft in its old age, but you''d be wrong. The black leather buckets grab you firmly but not uncomfortably, the pedals are right where they belong for heel-and-toe downshifts, and the shifter for the 6-speed manual is only inches from the fat steering wheel. The gauges are arrayed in typical Porsche fashion, with the tachometer front-and-center, and the rest spreading out in a cool 3-D pattern around it. White gauge faces were optional, and given Porsche''s penchant for tacking huge prices on minor upgrades, they probably cost as much as an expensive night out on the town. And yes, the 2507 miles it shows is accurate-I told you this car had an easy life. The S upgrade was all about performance, punching the flat-six out to 3.8 liters and 385 horsepower (up from 3.6 liters and 345 horsepower in the base model). This one also carries factory sport exhaust to make a total of 400 horsepower, a number formerly reserved for the top Turbo models. Properly serviced from new, the engine is barely broken in, and starts with a great cackling idle that raises to a tenor howl as the engine heads for the 8000 RPM redline. The 6-speed shifts far better than the gearboxes of old, and with modern suspension and electronic wizardry, the 911''s tail-happy antics have been permanently cured. Giant 19-inch rubber probably helps, wrapped around lovely aluminum wheels that act as frames for the massive cross-drilled brakes and bright red calipers. Complete with all its original documents, including window sticker, this is a virtually new 911 offered at a 20% discount. If an $87,000 car can be called a bargain, this is it. Call today!
