So it turns out that trucks make pretty cool rods, as this 1955 Chevy 3100 so ably demonstrates. All the usual tricks work here, and with a 427 under the hood, what you get when you''re done is a fast, fun, and surprisingly practical hauler that will attract a ton of attention wherever it goes. First of all, the charcoal gray paint is an eyeball magnet that grabs your attention without beating you over the head. Enjoy being subtle and staying under the radar with this one, but once you stop, you should expect to be the center of attention because it looks like a million bucks. Fortunately, it''s more than up to all that scrutiny, with great details and excellent workmanship. The bodywork, which was already dramatic right out of the box, looks even better when it''s been smoothed, shaved, and buffed like this truck''s skin has, and yes, that''s a hood-mounted tach. Some of the original trim is gone, but the stuff that remains provides a great contrast and has been beautifully re-chromed, including the grille, door handles, and those big bumpers that are directly descended from the passenger car lineup to give the ''55 Chevy trucks a much more finished look. Subtle red pinstripes highlight the hood, doors, and tailgate, and the bed is beautifully finished with fresh timber that''s simply gorgeous to look at. The interior has been given a full makeover as well, and the working-class accommodations have been replaced by first-class two-tone cloth and vinyl. The bench seat is a natural fit in the 3100''s cab and wears a custom-stitched seat cover that has a definite ''50s flair. Light carpets are the right contrast and keep it from being too dark, and the color-matched door panels have been as nicely finished as the bodywork. A custom gauge panel has been stuffed full of vintage-looking Auto Meter gauges, but the rest of it is stock. Under-dash A/C is powered by R134a refrigerant, so it''s easy to service and it''s so nicely integrated into the overall design that you may not even notice it at first glance. Finishing it off is a leather-wrapped billet steering wheel atop a tilt column, so it''s easy to get comfortable. A built 427 cubic inch big block has been nestled into the engine bay and dressed for show, and we don''t have to tell you how excited folks get when they see those three magical numbers hovering over the engine bay. The firewall and inner fenders are smooth and shiny like the bodywork, and that bright Chevy Orange engine looks as mean as you''d expect. A shiny polished aluminum intake, chrome valve covers, and a custom accessory drive all add to the dramatic look that you''ll be aching to show off. Underneath, there''s a trick Flowmaster exhaust system with cut outs and dumps just ahead of the rear wheels and sounds fantastic, while a TH400 3-speed automatic spins a 10-bolt rear end. Rack-and-pinion steering, fat sway bars, and traction bars out back mean that it sticks to the pavement better than any 1955 pickup ever made. Classic American Racing wheels wear fat Goodyear radials that fill the big fenders just right. Trucks like this don''t happen by accident and aren''t available very often.
