Description:

On March 20, 1957 the 3500GT was announced as the first "production" Maserati at the Geneva Car Show . The car was bodied by Touring of Milan with superleggera (extra-light) construction. This was achieved by hand forming aluminum panels over a steel frame. In addition a few "one off" cars were produced by various coachworks including Bertone and Allemano. Priced at over $12,000, this car was targeted at a very exclusive audience.Power came from the race proven Maserati 3.5 litre in-line six cylinder with aluminium block and dual ovrhead cams. A very unique feature is the use of dual spark plugs per cylinder and dual coils. Many people not familiar with the engine think it is an inline 12 cylinder! Initially, the 3500 GT had Weber carburettors, 4 speed gearbox and drum brakes but by the end of production in 1964, the car was fuel injected, 5 speed and discs all round. The Maserati 3500 GTi became the first Italian production car with fuel injection. While Ferrari primary focus was on performance, Maserati was more interested in "Grand Touring". This is very evident by the attention to details. While the interior of a Ferrari of the same era is rather sparse, the Maserati driver was presented with a very attractive combination of chrome trims, gauges, switches, indicator lights and levers and lots of leather. Even power windows were a standard feature. Although not designed to be a race car, the 3500GT performs quite well with 235BHP at 5800 RPM.This Maserati 3500 GT has been the subject of a six year long restoration and has been a labour of love. The most striking aspect of the restoration is the minute attention to detail. For example the vinyl material that lines the boot is no longer available from Maserati. Instead of using a substitute, special tooling was made to recreate the original at a cost of some 6000 euros.....The aluminium trim that surrounds the insides of the doors and inner sills and around the engine bay have been refabricated at great expense. The instruments have been individually restored. This is a level of detail you would normally find on the restoration of a very valuable car. In essence no corners have been cut.Mechanically it can effectively be described as new. The engine, gearbox, back axle, supension, brakes, exhaust.........i could go on, are all rebuilt using genuine Maserati parts. The car sits on correct Pirelli Cinturato tyres with brand new Borrani wire wheels. We cannot fault the car and we challenge you to find a better example of a Maserati 3500 GT anywhere. These cars are highly underrated and we could not reccomend it more, perhaps as an interesting alternative to something like an Aston Martin DB4.Price
