Chassis number: 49349Engine number: 49349Date produced: 1938Model : 135M 2 Passenger CoupeThis special swept panel coupe design is believed to be a one-off and may have been shown at the 1938 Paris Motor Show. The long flowing fenders with chrome accents, three stepped-side moldings and flowing beltline make this one of the most beautiful bodies fitted to a pre-war Delahaye. The engine is a 217 cubic inch, overhead camshaft in-line six cylinder.Equipped with triple carburetors It produces 160 horsepower. The transmission is a Cotal electromagnetic, pre-selector. A pre-select gearbox is not an automatic transmission. The defining characteristic of such a transmission is that a shift lever is used to “pre-select” the next gear to be used. Then, a separate control – a foot pedal – is used to engage this in a single operation; thus, eliminating the need to work a manual clutch. In fact, once under motion, the use of the clutch is completely eliminated. The wheelbase of this car is the same as all standard Delahaye type 135 cars, 116 inches. The length is also the same at 180 inches and the weight is 2,800 pounds. Special features on this sport coupe were a strengthened chassis, wire wheels and a factory fitted luggage rackThe chassis is conventional save for independent front suspension. The 135 series was noted for supple and advanced road behavior and 100 mile-per-hour performance.Two-seat, sports Delahayes, such as this car, were considered special indeed and thus used primarily for concours or racing. In fact, a series 135 Delahaye won the 1938 ‘LeMans 24 Hours’ as well as many other important racing events of the time. This car is recorded as being delivered by Delahaye to their dealer in Portugal. While the first purchaser is unknown it was later purchased, in Portugal, by Giuseppe Dodici, who owned it for over twenty years, When he relocated to Luxembourg, he took the car with him.In 2000 a car collector in Connecticut named Manny Dragone purchased the car from Dodici. Dragone sold it to the present owner in 2005..This car has never been in the Delahaye Club and has been privately owned throughout. As a consequence gathering historical information has proven difficult. However it is believed the car has always been safely and correctly stored to protect it from the elements. It is highly original, apart from a recent bare metal repaint and is in great running order.Consider this car a real survivor, as it has never been fully restored, only maintained cosmetically and mechanically. That, in itself, makes this car special, since most pre-war cars are on their second and third restorations. In fact, the mileage on the odometer was just 48,000 kilometers, last time anyone checked.PricePOA
