This stunning 2005 Saleen S281 SC, car number 1280, is equipped with the same blown V8, slick 5-speed transmission and pack-leading appearance as its siblings; and it’s also had roughly $20K in mechanical mods that take it from truly lust-worthy to flat out scary! This rowdy Mustang coupe is a 3-owner land rocket that, like most of our low-mileage, factory-fresh offerings, is virtually spotless in every way. The car’s super straight body displays a glossy layer of Saleen Screaming Yellow basecoat that, judging by its smooth appearance, has been freshened and maintained with the utmost care. That bright yellow pigment lays the ground work for a blanket of traditional Saleen decals which are tastefully designed and carefully applied. Of course, this blue oval bombshell has never seen major body work because it’s a 100% accident-free showpiece that’s been in the hands of dedicated enthusiasts. There’s essentially nothing on the car that could be considered more than prerequisite shelf wear. Combining clean factory sheetmetal with a functional aero kit, this awesome Ford rarity looks ready to parade the midway and willing to tackle the track. At the front of its body, an injection-molded valence hangs a black serial number below a custom, “SALEEN” branded grille, round marker lamps and traditional, black-bucket headlights. Behind that valence, a Saleen Super-Flo hood, which features added clearance and functional heat extractors, leads the eye to a shortened antenna, body-matched mirrors and a dark-tinted greenhouse. At the sides of that hood, a classic Mustang profile is complemented by aggressive Saleen rockers, subtle “S281 SUPERCHARGED” emblems and throwback C-pillar vents that recall classic 60s Shelbys. And at the back of that profile, a large Saleen spoiler, custom fender extensions and a custom trunk extension frame a textured valence, an aggressive, “SALEEN” branded bumper and centered stainless exhaust tips.
As we all know, Steve Saleen’s creations have never been defined by mere stripes and stickers. Straight from his shop, this Ford’s heavily re-engineered ‘mod motor’ makes an even 400 horsepower and an impressive 420 lb./ft. of low-end torque. And with the help of a custom tune by the folks at Injected Engineering of Kennesaw, Georgia, its performance goes from wild to insane! In addition to the 2300cc of air provided by its Saleen Series VI twin screw supercharger, the aluminum mill uses a better cam, revised injectors, an upgraded pulley, long-tube headers, a JLT air tube and a GT500 dual fuel pump to crank out a dyno-proven 504 horsepower and 476 lb./ft. of torque. Visually, the engine compartment comes together just as well as the outside of the car. Saleen’s install is exceptionally clean and forgoes the current ‘plastic dome of doom’ engine cover trend in favor of a Saleen-branded centerpiece and clean fuel rails. The hot mill is a melting pot of machined and natural finishes that contrasts well against the car’s bright yellow paint. And, best of all, this muscle-bound brute will fire up in any weather, drive thousands of miles before anyone needs to turn its bolts, and certainly lay waste to almost any old school muscle car that’s brave enough to pick a fight.
The greatest advancement granted by the new Mustang platform is its ability to corner and handle like a thoroughbred without the hammering of previous performance suspensions. And, in keeping with his own race ancestry, Saleen designed this track-ready chassis utilizing very precise components. The car’s proven Macpherson Strut and Panhard Rod set up, which is derived from racing and performance applications, offers some of the purest handling found in any OEM street car. And, taking full advantage of Saleen’s upgrades, the car’s current owner installed Metco billet control arms that improve responsiveness without sacrificing ride quality. Years ago, Saleens were criticized for their harsh ride, but those days are definitely long gone. Behind the supercharged engine, a rugged Tremec 5-speed manual drives a tall 3.55 rear end that makes for spectacular wheel spin and astounding acceleration. Charred dinosaurs are expelled through a modified exhaust system that incorporates Saleen’s vacuum-actuated mufflers into custom, 2.5 inch stainless pipes. Braking is handled by yellow Wilwood calipers that clamp large drilled and slotted rotors at all four corners. Ample grip is supplied by 20 inch Vossen wheels which spin 265/35 Nitto Extremes in front of 305/35 Nitto Extreme Drags. And overall, this coupe is an absolute delight to drive!
Drop inside this pristine, polished pony and you’ll immediately notice that its pleated Saleen seats are every bit as comfortable as they are attractive. In front of those seats, a familiar Mustang dash hangs intricately detailed telemetry between small accessory gauges, a “SALEEN” badge and a Steve Saleen autograph. Below those accessory gauges, a Shaker 500 stereo system combines with polished climate control knobs to become a one-stop shop for all your convenience needs. Below those knobs, a wide console props a Saleen-branded shifter in front of ample storage space. Beneath that storage space, like-new carpet anchors color-keyed floor mats between metal foot pedals and Saleen sill plates. Above those sill plates, sculpted door panels hang full-length armrests between small metal handles and big kick speakers. It’s always hard to describe a car that is essentially new in every way.
