The more things change, the more they stay the same. Chevrolet’s 2013 showroom will be populated by a world class sports car, an egocentric muscle car, a top dog Super Sport and the hardworking Malibu mid-size. Likewise, Chevrolet’s 1966 showroom was populated with a world class sports car, an egocentric pony car, a top dog Impala SS and this hard working Chevelle mid-size. Steadfast, distinguished and great to look at, this restored workhorse carries the trademark combination of classic good looks and rugged versatility that has built the bowtie brigade into one of the largest and most recognized brands in the world. The car’s no-nonsense nature and big performance potential was a huge hit with 60s gearheads; and given the recent shift back to more traditional hot rodding, it seems only natural that these clean commoners will see a major boost in popularity. If you’re looking to ride in style, you really can’t go wrong with GM’s second generation A-Body. And when you factor in this Chevelle’s dyno-proven V8, mostly original interior and correct color combination, you realize what an incredible car it really is! Originally delivered to Edwin P. Klee via Clements Chevrolet in Rochester, Minnesota, this razor-sharp coupe lived in the same family for close to 30 years. When the car’s original steward, Mr. Klee’s wife, finally decided to sell, Bradley Fischer of Stewartville, Minnesota became its lucky new owner. And even though he inherited a super solid survivor, Mr. Fischer commenced a thorough, frame-off restoration that replaced everything but the car’s original Cameo Beige paint. Today, this Chevy’s long body features solid panels that appear to have led a quiet, drama-free existence. Those panels display better-than-factory alignment and, when opened and closed, sound solid and function exceptionally well. And thanks to 2012-era two-stage that’s founded in a fresh layer of correct GM code V basecoat, the car possesses the kind of clean, head-turning good looks that induce chronic neck strain! Thanks to its unique trim levels and classy appearance, the 1966 Chevelle mid-size did an excellent job slotting between Chevrolet''s working class Nova and storied Impala. At the front of the car, clear halogen headlights and a black-inlayed grille center a small “CHEVELLE” emblem between a bright hood fin, a fresh chrome bumper and small, amber parking lamps. At the sides of the car, cross-flag fender emblems and quarter-mounted “Malibu” scripts hint at an upscale personality, while traditional door handles and straight wheel trim perfectly complement textured rocker moldings and subtle gray pinstripes. At the top of the car, like-new glass is traced by bright stainless trim, flanked by a chrome bowtie mirror and cleared by familiar stainless wipers. And at the back of the car, a glossy black valence hangs a tri-color Chevrolet crest between a bold “CHEVELLE” script, curved tail lights and a second chrome bumper. Under this custom’s Kansas-flat hood you’ll find a 355 cubic inch, balanced and blueprinted V8 that utilizes an upgraded cam to produce 340 dyno-proven horsepower. And although that fully restored mill may look small in the car’s super tidy engine bay, it has no problem carrying this relatively lightweight mid-size down the road just as fast as you want to go! At the top of the engine, a chrome air cleaner injects wind from a re-usable filter element into high octane fuel that’s juiced by a coated Edelbrock pump and polished stainless lines. Below that air cleaner, a coated Holley carburetor funnels a perfect air/fuel mixture into an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake that’s flanked by polished Chevy valve covers. Behind those valve covers, a chrome-capped distributor sequences spark through Hi Temp Super Stock Radio Suppression wires. Cooling is provided by a Northern aluminum radiator that’s equipped with sleeved hoses, a polished overflow tank and a big stainless shroud. Charging comes courtesy of a fresh V-belt, which spins a chrome alternator and a high quality Edelbrock water pump via attractive billet pulleys. And spent gases travel through a gorgeous pair of coated shorty headers to large, aluminized pipes. Aesthetically, this sweet Chevelle’s fully sorted engine bay displays a nice combination of Chevy Orange and gloss black paint. And small details like a liquid-filled pressure gauge, a glass GM washer bottle and bright, deadpan decals add the kind of intricate detailing that draws fans and elicits compliments! During its restoration, the car’s original double A-arm front and 4-link rear suspension was completely rebuilt and fitted with a pair of modern air shocks. Above that suspension, rust-free floorpans are covered in a traditional layer of weather-resistant undercoating. Behind the stout small block, a 1966 Muncie 4-speed, a Corvette piece that features beveled and chambered gears, sends torque to a familiar 10 bolt rear end. Braking is handled by a full set of correct GM drums, which have obviously been rebuilt at some point. Exhaust rumbles through big, aluminized tubes to a traditional H-pipe crossover and aggressive Dynomax mufflers. And power flows to the pavement via stunning Boss 338 wheels which spin 225/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 275/35ZR20 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs. All of the car’s lines, hoses, brackets and fasteners, which were completely replaced at the time of restoration, show little to no weathering. And everything from this Chevy’s polished oil pan to its fresh stainless fuel tank is fully sorted and ready to hit the road! Open this A-Body’s rock solid doors and you’ll find a correct GM code 708 Light Fawn interior that’s largely original to the car. In the middle of that interior, big bench seats are in excellent shape and show little to no signs of wear. In front of those seats, a warp-free dash hangs a modern Pioneer CD player inside a textured instrument panel and bright chrome trim. At the base of that dash, like-new carpet anchors “Chevelle” branded floor mats around a chrome Hurst shifter. At the sides of that carpet, tri-tone door panels hang bright chrome handles and pliable Fawn armrests between pristine stainless trim and dent-free Fisher sills. At the top of those panels, a tight headliner hangs a fully functional dome light behind color-keyed sun visors and a bright chrome mirror. In front of the driver, a classy chrome steering wheel displays a tasteful, “CHEVELLE” branded horn button. And behind the passengers, beefy Sony Xplods hang over a fully restored trunk that’s equipped with a full-size spare tire. The sale of this super clean Chevelle includes an original owner’s manual, an original Protect-O-Plate, dyno results for the car’s hot 355 V8, a large show board and a small stack of marketing materials. Fully restored and professionally sorted, this 1966 Chevrolet mid-size is a top notch classic that’s ready for years of shows and miles of cruising. It’s one of the last great no-nonsense, no-frills designs to come out of Detroit; and it’s the kind of car that your family will enjoy for generations. Whether your interest lies in killer cruisers, classic good looks, or vintage Mo-town style, this custom Chevelle has it all!
