This incredible Cobra is no ordinary replica. No, under that incredible black paint is aluminum, not fiberglass, and with a genuine AC number plate, it''s as close to the real thing as you''re going to get for less than half a million bucks. Add in an injected 5.0 under the hood and a fully independent suspension, and it''s a thrill ride like few others on earth. AC Cars of Surrey, England is perhaps the company most responsible for the Cobra''s awesome look. That timeless design has survived the decades virtually untouched and still makes kids stop in their tracks to point as it hammers past and every car guy has thought more than once that this is the one car he''d like to own above all others. So if you''re going to do it, do it right and get one that rings when you knock your knuckles against its skin. It''s almost a shame to paint the lovely lightweight panelwork, but nobody will complain about the incredible finish on this snake, which is simple black borrowed from BMW, so it''s both luxurious and sinister. All the proper Cobra attributes are included, including the tubular bumpers, the roll bar behind the driver, and the shiny aluminum gravel shield on the bulging rear fenders, which is as useful as it is stylish. The interior is pretty darned close to the original, too, with low-back buckets swathed in English leather. A wood-rimmed wheel with an ''AC'' logo in the center, not a Cobra, tells you which side of the pond this car comes from, and a full array of instruments do a pretty good impersonation of the original Smiths pieces, as they should since Autokraft has been building Cobras longer than just about anybody. As a factory-built car, there are niceties like the warning lights ahead of the driver and typically European indecipherable climate controls, plus a column-mounted ignition which is a sure sign of an engineering department doing the design work, not some guy in his suburban garage. Upscale door panels make for a luxurious feel inside that''s a step up over the bare-bones Cobra standard, and even the fully-finished trunk carries a spare tire-when was the last time you saw a Cobra with one of those? For OEM performance and reliability, there''s a fuel injected Ford 5.0 under the hood with the full Cobra upgrade kit. It''s a neat fit in there and with the lightweight body, performance is explosive without the high-strung antics of a vintage powerplant. Simply turn the key and it''s running, and it''ll idle in traffic and scream to 6000 RPM all in the same breath. A T5 5-speed manual gearbox, also from a Mustang, provides effortless shifting and a deep overdrive for easy cruising, and unlike every single replica out there, this one wears a standard dual exhaust system that''s kind of refreshing in this day and age. Out back, there''s an independent Salisbury rear axle and there''s a disc brake at all four corners. Authentic Halibrand wheels with pin-drive knock-off centers complete the look, and wear modern 225/50/16 front and 255/50/16 rear Goodyears that were original equipment. Still on its original MSO and never titled, this incredible machine neatly straddles the line between authentic Cobra and replica, and needs no excuses in either camp. Call today!
