One look at this 1969 Thunderbird and you can tell Ford''s engineers hadn''t quite excised "jet age" styling out of their systems. That tucked in grille, full of slats and chrome, apes front-feed fighters like the F-86 Sabre, complete with a tapering of the nose into the fenders. In the world of fifth-generation ''Birds, this one''s a winner with its bright red paint, rust-free body, 429 power under the hood, and an impeccable cosmetic restoration. You can get adequate results when you start with a basket case, but you simply can''t beat a clean starter car. This one was stripped down to bare metal, revealing nothing but the sheetmetal that Henry gave it when new. The subsequent layers of primers and paint are laid down smoothly and crisply. Trim and chrome are excellent, and the glass is clear. Sequential taillights remained a Thunderbird styling cue, and the Landau top set this car apart from its lesser brethren. Powerful quarter panel contours, strong body side lines and a tapering towards the front fenders give the appearance of speed, even when parked. It''s a great looking car in magnificent condition. Inside, the largely original interior is excellent from top to bottom. Aircraft-inspired gauges and a severe emphasis on the "cockpit" for the driver reinforce the fighter jet theme. The steering column is a Tilt-A-Way, which looks as cool as it makes entry easier. The seat covers and door panels are either vintage replacements or originals, and they''re in great shape. Air conditioning makes long trips feel a lot shorter, and there''s plenty of stainless trim, woodgrain on the dash and detail imprints in the vinyl seats remind you that this car is more than just transport: it''s personal luxury on wheels. Under the hood, you''ll find a highly detailed engine compartment. The 385 series 429, the replacement for the venerable FE engine family, made its debut in Thunderbirds and delivers lots of torque and a cool 360 horsepower. Correct Ford Engine Blue is on the engine and air cleaner, while the Select Aire air conditioning compressor takes a prominent place on the upper left, and the small cooler is the correct power steering part. Of course, Thunderbirds came with power steering and brakes-this was part of Ford''s plan to move the car away from the Mustang and closer to the Lincoln division. As clean as the top looks, the bottom isn''t too shabby, and you need to be reminded that this wasn''t a rotisserie restoration-it simply didn''t need one. The floors still have the original red oxide primer on them, and the car''s rust free condition takes about two seconds to confirm. A solid C6 3-speed automatic transmission transfers power from the big mill up front to the 9-inch out back. The dual exhaust system has a slight rumble, befitting of a car like this and the turbine-style hubcaps with red trim behind them puts the aircraft styling over the top. Previous owners have kept a decent number of records on the car, and they also kept the original owner''s manual, plus a nice display sign that you can use from your first car show on.
