Starting its current life as a super solid driver, this convertible endured a seven year, nut and bolt restoration that transformed it from a 6-cylinder secretary special into the battle-ready snake you see today. Naturally, the car’s body was stripped to bare metal, patched and completely massaged over the course of hundreds of hours of labor. A fresh coat of Candyapple Red two-stage was ridded of its blue tint, layered over thick primer, and accented with familiar gold side stripes. Panel fit and finish work was refined to near faultless levels, creating clear reflections from a profile that displays a notable absence of flaws. And when all was said and done, this Ford debuted as a fresh twist on a ‘can’t miss’ favorite that puts common restorations to shame.
In an attempt to give their star flagship a more luxurious look for the 1969 model year, Ford designers penned a Shelby-exclusive front end that was very contemporary. The car’s fenders and hood, which are both fiberglass, create a large, rectangular grille opening that’s detailed with an off-set Shelby emblem and 7-inch halogen headlights. Below that grille, ornate parking lamps flank a large valence that’s filled with amber Lucas driving lights. At the sides of that valence, a smooth and modern profile trades traditional Mustang ornamentation for integrated brake ducts, bright chrome door handles, small snake emblems and bold “428 COBRA JET” scripts. At the top of that profile, like-new glass rides between a fresh white top, color-keyed race mirrors and a functional ram air system that utilizes five NASA scoops. Behind that glass, a solid fiberglass decklid is augmented by traditional Shelby fender extensions to create a prominent rear spoiler. And below that decklid, ‘65 Thunderbird tail lights illuminate a pristine spoiler insert, a showroom-fresh bumper, chrome-trimmed reverse lamps and a unique aluminum exhaust collector.
We all know those aggressive looks aren’t the Mustang’s only claim to fame. And, in typical Shelby style, this little red land rocket roars like a P-51 chasing the Luftwaffe. Lift the car’s glossy, fiberglass hood and you’ll find an era-correct, 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8 that’s been completely rebuilt using high quality parts from Perogie Enterprises. Long regarded as some of the meanest mills ever created, Ford’s fabled Cobra Jet series utilized revised heads, heavy duty Le Mans connecting rods and a nodular iron crank to ensure blue oval-branded pony cars remained the kings of stoplight muscle. At the top of the Ford Blue block, functional ram air feeds a chrome-capped air cleaner that’s sealed to a big Holley carburetor. At the sides of that carburetor, finned aluminum valve covers hang over fully restored exhaust manifolds that breathe through factory replacement tail pipes. In front of those manifolds, a correct points distributor sequences fire from a reproduction Autolite voltage regulator to fresh Autolite Radio Resistance wires. And below those wires, reproduction Autolite hoses circulate water through a heavy duty radiator and era-correct tower clamps. Aesthetically, the exceptionally detailed engine bay appears very true to form, featuring an even coat of satin black paint under bright Ford decals. Everything, from the motor’s factory smog system and silver accessory brackets to the bay’s correctly reinforced shock towers and tagged Autolite Sta-Ful, is fully sorted and ready to go. And there’s even an old school Selectaire system that adds both interest and value!
Take a look under this Ford and you’ll find exceptionally clean floors that were patched and correctly primered during the car’s extensive restoration. Behind the brutal 428, an era-correct Toploader twists torque to an era-correct 9-inch that’s complete with both a Traction-Lok differential and lucid, 3.25 gears. At the front of the car, a familiar torsion bar suspension holds a beefy sway bar and factory-optioned power steering between modern power disc brakes. At the back of the car, new leaf springs hang correct drum brakes at the edges of a fresh stainless fuel tank. And at the center of the car, a correct, factory replacement exhaust system funnels spent gases through a familiar H-pipe crossover, small resonators and a big, transverse muffler. Power flows to the pavement through 15-inch Shelby wheels, which consist of aluminum center sections that are welded to chrome rims and wrapped in correct F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs. And everything from this Mustang’s paint-marked driveshaft to its staggered and Shelby-branded shocks performs as good, or better, than the day it rolled out of the factory.
Inside this awesome GT500 you’ll find a striking Deluxe Décor interior that features hi-back bucket seats and enough style to swerve down the red carpet. Those rebuilt and recovered thrones are in spectacular shape and, since the car’s restoration was completed in late 2012, haven’t endured any of the traditional sun damage convertibles are known for. In front of those seats, a warp-free dash hangs a correct 8,000 RPM tachometer and rare 140 MPH speedometer beside a direct-fit radio and authentic Carroll Shelby autograph. Below that dash, a full-length console centers a familiar Hurst shifter between modern Stewart Warner accessory gauges and switches for both the car’s fog and courtesy lamps. At the bottom of that console, new black carpet is bordered by stainless Shelby sill plates and protected by thick rubber floor mats. Above that carpet, sculpted door panels mix great looking wood trim with bright stainless accents and correct Shelby snake emblems. Above those panels, a correct Shelby roll bar leads the eye to an optional glass backlight. In front of the driver, an upfitted Rim Blow steering wheel spins around a rare Tilt-Away steering column. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk hangs correct decklid decals above a new mat and full-size spare tire.
