If you''re a Chevy engineer in the early 1990s, it''s probably pretty easy to see where the future is headed: back to the muscle car era. With that in mind, the Chevy 454SS was born, combining the big block from the heavy-duty trucks in the lightest half-ton chassis to create the first muscle truck of the modern era. Loaded with the original build sheet, window sticker and bill of sale, this one is worth a closer look. This 1992 454SS is one of those rare beasts that hasn''t been modified or beaten to death-after all, who figured that these were going to be collectors'' items two decades later? Even better, this is a relatively unusual white SS, which, to my eye, works best with the blacked-out trim and vivid emblems on the back of the bed sides. A cowl induction hood was added and it definitely suits the burly SS quite well, especially as the direct descendant of the mighty muscle cars of the past. Other details are merely well preserved, including the lower valence with integrated fog lamps, the blacked-out grille, and the color-matched rear bumper that''s never seen a parking lot ding. Even the bed is virgin white paint, not protected by a bedliner so you know it''s had an easy life. The only other noteworthy modification is a set of neat flush-fitting stake pocket fillers that give the bed a sleeker look. The SS got the same upscale bucket seat interior as the other top-of-the-line Chevy pickups. With red fabric on supportive bucket seats, it''s quite flashy and looks awesome against the vivid white paint. A center console provides extra storage and a set of cup holders and limits carrying capacity strictly to two people, which was entirely the point. All SS models came loaded, including A/C, power windows and locks, a tilt steering column, and cruise control, making it as much luxury machine as horsepower factory. This one is beautifully preserved with the seats showing almost zero wear and apparently floor mats have been protecting the carpets since Day One. Even the original AM/FM/cassette radio with centrally-mounted equalizer is still in place, a complex arrangement that kind of suggests that Chevy didn''t realize its truck customers wanted good sounds when they were designing the C/K series. The 454SS gets its name, of course, from the 454 cubic inch big block under the hood. There was a time when such a combination was verboten in GM''s hierarchy, but they made an exception for these awesome trucks. The real story was torque, and lots of it. When you''re destined for work in duallies pulling horse trailers it''s your calling card, but when you magically remove, oh, about 800 pounds from the curb weight, things tend to happen in a big way. The engine is completely stock, so it runs superbly and doesn''t get cranky, and since owners of these trucks spend a good deal of time showing off their engines, it''s well-dressed with a set of finned valve covers. It''s backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission whose shifts tend to magnify the engine''s torque by yanking the whole truck up to speed rather than bogging down, and it has been recently treated to all-new brakes, axle seals, and 275/60/15 blackwall radials on the original chrome wheels. These trucks enjoy the same collector status as the late Impala SS. With its original build sheet, bill of sale, and window sticker, it''s also nicely documented. Call today!
