Description:

Ford invented the high-performance pickup truck with the SVT Lightning in the mid-90s, a legacy that continues today in various forms from a variety of manufacturers. Better still, those first-generation Lightnings were siblings of the mighty 5.0 Mustang, and all the goodies that you can use on a Mustang can be used just as well on a Lightning, just as they were in this case. But before we get to the hardware, let''s talk about the enduring popularity of the F150. Simple good looks were surely part of the truck''s longevity and popularity, and the SVT engineers didn''t do much to change that. They took the lightest and most maneuverable body-the short bed, regular cab-for their hot rod pickup, and offered it in only three colors: white, black, and the bright red found on this one. Still, it''s pretty subtle, with the only notable upgrade from a garden-variety F150 being a deeper chin spoiler and some modest "Lightning" badges. Fortunately, the owner kept it that way, retaining the original, low-profile look. The paint still shines, the gaps are good all around, and since the Lightning could technically carry a load, this one got a spray-in bed liner for protection. There''s also a rear roll pan that replaces the rather frumpy-looking stock bumper, and a color-matched grille that''s still in great shape despite nearly two decades of powering down the highway. Obviously someone has been to the corporate parts bin, and thanks to more than a decade of Lightning production in various forms, there are all kinds of goodies available. For instance, the bucket seats with Lightning logos embroidered on their backs were borrowed from a late-model. However, it still carries its original wheel and instrument panel, although there''s a row of Auto Meter Sport Comp gauges running up the A-pillar to watch boost and fuel pressure. Lightnings came only one way: loaded, so this one includes A/C, power windows and locks, cruise control, and an upgraded AM/FM/cassette stereo with remote CD changer. It''s all in extremely good shape and the modifications are very tastefully done with an eye towards keeping it as OEM as possible in function and appearance. Now about that engine. See, the Lightning got a 351 cubic inch V8, and as part of the Windsor family, it''s basically a tall-deck 5.0. And yes, it also means that all the 5.0 performance parts will bolt right on, which is the case here. The engine was bored .030 over, stuffed with a balanced crank and SCAT H-beam rods and SRP forged pistons to handle the boost. A Ford Motorsport X303 racing cam handles the valves in the ported GT40 heads and Comp Cams roller rockers. The intake was ported and fitted with 42 lb-hr injectors and a 75mm throttle body, all the better to use the boost from the Vortech V1 blower with intercooler. It''s bolted to an AOD 4-speed automatic that''s been suitably fortified, and the stock rear end still plants the power. A custom dual exhaust system sounds gnarly, and the OEM look continues with a set of 18-inch alloys from a late-model Lightning which wear 285/50/18 Bridgestone performance radials. Cleverly built and extremely fast, this Lightning is more than just a fast truck, it''s a Mustang with a bed. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Dallas/Fort Worth showroom.
