Description:

The T-bucket is an icon in the hot-rodding world, but just because the formula is set, don''t think that there aren''t ways to color outside the line. Take this 1923 T roadster for example. It''s definitely a T-bucket, but with the lime green paint, diamond-tufted interior, and a Ford 289 for power, it remains a little outside the mainstream. And that''s a good thing! OK, the lime green paint isn''t exactly subtle, but that''s the T-bucket''s specialty: in-your-face extremism. If it had any less bodywork, it would be a motorcycle, and the exaggerated proportions are expressly designed to emphasize speed over everything else. So no, forget subtle. Fortunately, it IS well-built and the bodywork is nicely prepped and finished so you''ll need no excuses in that department. All the traditional details are there, from the upright windshield and Model T radiator shell, to the token pickup truck bed. For a little more fun, many of the features were rendered in diamond-plate aluminum, including the "tonneau cover" over the bed itself and the step plates to help you climb in. Hand pinstriping accentuates its 1950s origins while things like the LED taillights plant it squarely in the 21s century. The interior is 1970s chic; that is, so dated that it''s cool again. The tufted leather seat and wrap-around upholstery work looks like a booth out of a 1974 Las Vegas steak house but that''s entirely the point. The workmanship is quite well done and once you''re settled, it''s easy to get comfortable in the relatively cozy interior. The steering column is a little more raked than most, making it easy to find a good driving position, and the pedals are well-placed for cruising comfort. More diamond plate forms the instrument panel, which hosts a whole array of white-faced Eqqus gauges. There''s an AM/FM/CD stereo hidden in there with an antenna on the rear deck, but if you need rain protection you''d better drive a different car. But on the upside, cargo space is pretty decent with the matching trailer that comes with the car. Finding a Ford engine in a Ford rod is always a nice surprise for Ford fans, so the 289 cubic inch V8 should make you happy if you''re partial to the Blue Oval. The Edelbrock catalog supplied a lot of the goodies on the engine, ranging from the intake and carb to the chrome dress-up kit that makes it sparkle out there in the open like that. Green plug wires tie the whole thing together, and those long-tube headers and side pipes are an integral part of the T-bucket look, not to mention that they sound downright awesome. A C4 3-speed automatic spins a stubby driveshaft and a 9-inch rear, which hangs on a transverse leaf spring just like they always have. Up front, there''s a dropped I-beam axle with disc brakes on either end, reinforcing this car''s direct ties to its roots. And, of course, no T-bucket is complete without a major big-n-little tire combination, with this one riding on shiny aluminum Centerline Convo-Pro wheels and 195/60/15 radials in front and 29x15-15 meats in back. The T-bucket isn''t for everyone, but if this kind of motoring insanity does appeal to you then this is an excellent example that colors outside the lines just enough to earn its status as a rebel.
