Go to any show and you''ll see an El Camino of some sort or another, but it''s quite unlikely that you''ll see a mid-60s Elky like this, with its L79 small block, a factory 4-speed, and that gorgeous low-profile Butternut Yellow paint. Unusual? You bet! One of Chevy''s most unusual sleepers, this 1965 El Camino looks simply fantastic in Butternut Yellow. Did it work for a living way back when? Hard to say but with that smooth, shiny paint, you are almost afraid to touch it, let alone haul stuff in it, so its'' quite possible this one was a commuter and not a worker. Whatever the case, someone spent a sizable pile of cash to get it into the condition you see today, showing excellent gaps, impeccable fit and finish, and some of the best chrome and stainless we''ve seen in a long, long time. I think they left the bed painted instead of throwing in a bed liner or some kind just to show off their metalworking skills, because even in that heavily-trafficked area, it''s smooth, straight, and seamless. For advertising, there''s little more than the crossed-flag emblems on the front fenders to give away the fact that this is no garden-variety Elky. This unusual hauler really did come from the factory with bucket seats and a console, making it one of only a handful so equipped in 1965. New seat covers look like they belong in a muscle car, and the 4-speed shifter looks right at home in the cozy El Camino cabin. A fat wood-rimmed wheel is an obvious upgrade, but otherwise it''s pretty much stock inside, which is entirely a good thing. A shiny dash fascia brightens up the all-black interior and hosts an array of original gauges plus rare factory A/C. The Hurst shifter with cue ball knob just begs to bang through the gears and it''s been dressed up a bit with new floor mats wearing "El Camino" script. There''s also an AM/FM/cassette stereo for entertainment, making this a truck/car you can drive every day if you''d like. There''s even a full-sized spare tire stashed behind the passenger''s seat, so no worries about being stranded in your favorite ride. Like their cousins the Chevelle, the El Camino could carry any number of engines, up to and including the 350 horsepower L79 327. Fully dressed like it''s ready to hit the show field, the high-winding small block doesn''t look like one of GM''s top performers until you get up close and notice the Edelbrock carburetor, Winters intake, and a set of long-tube headers to bolster low-end torque. In a satin black engine bay, nothing stands out like bright Chevy Orange, and with reproduction decals and an open-element air cleaner, this is an engine compartment you''ll be happy to show off every chance you get. It''s backed by a factory 4-speed gearbox and a 10-bolt rear. Floors on this very solid vintage truck remain in outstanding condition and it sits right on slightly oversized and staggered 205/70/14 front and 235/75/15 radials and Rally wheels. A rather unusual beast, it was put together the way the factory might have done it nearly 50 years ago.
