Few cars have the timeless appeal of the first-generation Corvette, also known as the "solid axle" cars. This 1961 Corvette roadster boasts it''s believed to be original, numbers-matching 283 and 4-speed, making it an investment-grade early Corvette for the serious collector. The 1961 Corvettes were a sneak-preview of the upcoming 1963 Stingray, and offered the slick ducktail rear end and the round taillights that are a Corvette trademark to this day. It''s also true that the Corvette had evolved from a crude sports car into an A-list celebrity, welcome at any event thanks to its sophistication, but still able to run with the fastest machines on earth. Few could do it better than this beautiful roadster, which still looks awesome thanks to a top-quality restoration a few years ago and a lifetime in the warm southern US. The two-tone Roman Red with Ermine White side coves (a $16.15 option) paint scheme was done in two-stage urethane, so the shine is exceptional and seems to emphasize the car''s dramatic curves and sharp creases. The fiberglass is in excellent shape with none of the usual issues, and while it has been driven, it still looks dazzling in person. Of course, there''s still plenty of chrome, including the front bumpers, side cove trim, and rear bumperettes, and the overall effect is impressive. Be prepared to fall in love with this one. Coordinated bright red buckets are the right choice with Roman Red, and the interior has been restored to the same standards as the bodywork. The seats have a comfortable, inviting look, and those narrow pleats are a cool twist on the familiar look and they show virtually zero wear. The instrument panel features a full array of gauges, including a correct tachometer mounted atop the steering column, which was still somewhat of a novelty in 1961. A 4-speed was your only transmission choice if you were serious about performance, and I love the basic simplicity of the mini-console. A later AM/FM/cassette stereo has been fitted in the original dash, so there''s no need to worry about entertainment on the road. It''s odd seeing a trunk lid on a Corvette, but underneath you''ll find a nicely finished cargo bay with a correct mat, and up top there''s a white convertible top that''s in very good condition. There is paperwork showing this car to be a low owner and two states Corvette. The 283 under the hood has been decked but is still believed to be the original to the car. Beautifully detailed and rebuilt to stock specs, the snarling exhaust note leaves no doubt that this car was tuned to take no prisoners. The engine cranks to life easily and can be driven without worries thanks to decades of development work on the small block Chevy, making it the most reliable machine this side of a windmill. Detailing was correct at the time of restoration, and shows signs of light use, but that only means that it works as intended. Underneath, the chassis is solid but not detailed for show, but all the pieces are there and it goes down the road with authority. 205/75/15 wide whitewall radials on the original wheels and hubcaps complete the vintage look. The 1961 sales brochure probably says it best: "If you''re an enthusiastic rallyist, an out of-towner, a countryside explorer or all three, this Corvette matches your mood." Call today!
