Respect. This documented 1970 Mach 1 earns it. With its numbers-matching powertrain, unusual color combination, and exactly zero "upgrades" like you see on lesser cars, it''s a shining example of how to do it right if you''re a purist. If you want to attract attention, even at an all-Mustang gathering, cars like this incredible Mach 1 are the tools that will do it. Painted its original and highly unusual color of Medium Gold, it stands out with its proud ''70s look. Thanks to a rotisserie restoration, it''s simply spectacular in person showing super straight bodywork and expertly aligned gaps that make it far, far nicer than any assembly-line Mustang ever could be. Few will argue that the 1970 sportsroof isn''t a fantastic-looking piece of muscle, and with the Mach 1''s blacked-out hood treatment, scoop, and lower body moldings, it definitely looks the part. Options include the rear window slats that work well with the blacked-out tail panel and chin spoiler, and I''m fond of the no-wing look out back. Chrome was restored to show quality and all the emblems and badges are either excellent originals or exact reproductions that look right. And you will note that up front it proudly wears its AACA National First Prize plate, more proof that there aren''t many nicer than this. The interior color code 3F Ginger Knitted Vinyl is a fantastic complement to the Medium Gold paint, giving this particular Mustang a more adult look that shows some sense of style. It''s all new, of course, and like the exterior, extra care was used to keep it as authentic as possible. The bucket seats show zero wear thanks to very little use since it was finished (only enough to get it onto the show field), and things like the carpets, door panels, and dash pad are likewise brand new. The gauges appear to be original, but if that''s the case, they''re exceptional and the woodgrained appliques on the dash and center console are bright, crisp, and reasonably convincing as is appropriate. The factory-issued AM radio (a $61 option!) is in the dash, just ahead of the shifter for the 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. And like all the best show cars, the trunk is immaculately finished with a new mat and correct full-sized spare bias-ply tire (although it wears radials for driving). The base engine in the Mach 1 was the torquey 351 Windsor, and this matching-numbers small block is nestled neatly into an engine bay that''s worth of the first prize badge on the grille. Ford Blue paint pops against the satin black inner fenders and firewall, and even the original air cleaner lives up top. Unlike so many Mustangs, even those that have been "restored," this one keeps the original specifications, which includes s 2-barrel carburetor and single exhaust breathing through cast iron manifolds, which is what you need to do if you want to take home the big trophies. And speaking of the undercarriage, it''s correctly finished in red oxide primer with a nicely detailed 9-inch rear (3.00 gears) and a driveshaft with correct balancing stripes. Handsome Magnum 500 wheels were a popular option, and they now carry 205/70/14 Goodyear radials that ride and handle far better than the original bias-plys.
