1968 Pontiac GTO   History   The Pontiac GTO is an American automobile built by Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1964 to 1974. It was a muscle car classic of the 1960s and 1970s.   In early 1963, General Motors'' management issued a ban on involvement in auto racing. At the time, Pontiac''s advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance, and racing was an important component of that strategy. With GM''s ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac''s young and visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. The GTO was basically a violation of GM policy, but since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment, it fell into a loophole in the policy.   General Motors redesigned its A-body line for 1968, with more curvaceous, semi-fastback styling. The concealed headlights were a popular option. The signature hood scoop was replaced by dual scoops on either side of a prominent hood bulge extending rearward from the protruding nose. A unique feature was the body-color Endura front bumper. Another feature was concealed windshield wipers, hidden below the rear edge of the hood.   VIN 242378P328883   This is a real “242 VIN” GTO with a numbers matching motor. It is an original Tennessee Car. In face, this car has never been outside of Tennessee. It was owned by the same owner for over 25 years. The car underwent a full restoration, which was completed in 1993.   The sale includes Pontiac Historic Services Documentation, Original Build Sheet, TN title history back to the original owner. Also, extra parts will be shipped with the car, including: date code correct intake, original distributor, A/C duct work and original carburetor.     Mechanics   Numbers Matching 400ci YS Code Motor   10.75:1 Compression   Casting # 979001 = 1968 400ci   Production # - 759405   Stamped on Block - YS 1968 400ci 4bbl   400 Turbo Automatic Transmission   Aluminum Trans Pan   10 Bolt Posi-Traction Rear End with 3:55 Gears   Rear End Casting # 9793235 = Pontiac GTO Modular 10 Bolt 8.2 Rear End   Power Steering   Power Brakes Disc Up Front, Rear Drum   A/C - Not Hooked Up   Holley Carb   Period Correct Air Cleaner   New Exhaust System with Dynamax Mufflers   Gas Tank Replaced During Restoration   Bushings are New   Rebuilt Brakes   New Lines for Brakes   Reinforced Lower Control Arms   U Joints are New   New Shocks and Springs   Steering is in Great Shape     Body   Painted in 2007   Glass and Chrome Replaced at the Time of Restoration   Super Straight Body   Doors Fit and Operate Beautifully   Door Lips are Clean and Solid   Hood Tach Works   PMD Rally Wheels   Redline Tires 215/70/14 Front and Rear   Solid Trunk with Nice Paint and Clean Mat   Full Spare   Power Antenna   Frame is Super Solid and Clean   Floorboards are in Great Shape   Fender Wells are Solid, Clean and Nicely Painted   Rockers are Beautiful, Spot Welds and Pinch Welds are Visible and Clean     Interior   Factory Hurst Dual Gate Shifter   Original Interior   Bucket Seats are in Great Shape   Rare Headrest   Center Console   Great Looking Door Panels   Interior Chrome is in Great Shape   Wood Steering Wheel   Wood Grain Details in Dash   Headliner is in Great Shape, Dome Light Works   Trio of Gauges Under Dash   Seatbelts Front and Back   Rubber Floor Mats   Wipers Work   Hood Tach Works   Blower Works   AM Radio Works       Don’t Miss Out! If you are interested in this car, or any of our other 50+ cars, don’t wait for the auction to end on eBay. You may loose out if you wait! Our shop is open to the public, and when a walk in customer puts a deposit on a car we reserve the right to close the eBay listing before the auction ends. If you think this car is “The One”, we can end the auction by adding a “But It Now” to the auction for the reserve price. If an auction ends and the bids do not meet the reserve price, we will continue to relist it until it sells. Do not hesitate to contact Tom 7 days a week!   We take over 100 photographs of the car, as well as a high definition video, so you know exactly what to expect. We encourage you to hire an independent inspector to check out the car, prior to purchase or bidding.
