The Rebel name reappeared in 1966 on a version of the Rambler Classic two-door hardtop.
This model featured bucket seats, special interior and exterior trim, as well as a revised roofline. The base price of this top-of-the-line model was US$2,523 with the standard 232 cu in (3.8 L) I6; however, more sports oriented options were available that included a manual four-speed floor-mounted transmission, dash mounted tachometer, as well as the 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 producing 270 bhp (200 kW) for only an extra $65. This effort moved AMC once again toward the muscle car market segment; however the Rebel was criticized for its antiquated torque tube suspension system
Total production of the Rebel model was 7,512
This car was a great find. With the low production numbers for 66 and with the factory 232 Torque Commander 6, This is not a car that you will see that often. This car has tons of options and all of the looks. With its cool lines and stance, this car will turn heads anywhere you go. It will even make "car people" take a second glance trying to figure out for sure what car it is.
Reclining bench seat, A/C, Power Steering, Radio, Vinyl Top and Rally Steel Wheels are just some of the features you will find on this cool car.
Outside you find nice older paint that shines up very well and is free from any major flaws or rust. The body line are nice and straight and all in all has a great appearance. The wheels & tires look like new. All of the bright work is very presentable for the age.
Inside you will find that the seats have been redone and are in new condition. They are the reclining bench with center armrest. The carpet looks to have been replaced at some point. It has period correct floor mats. The dash and rest of the inside looks to be original. It look good but does show it age some. Everything seems to be in good working order and the A/C was blowing cold when we drove it!
Under the hood you will see the original 232 Torque Commander 6-cyl. Everything is nice and clean under the hood. In fact other than the newer style battery, it still has its original unaltered look. The motor & trans work just find and it is really a treat to drive.
The 1st thing you do when you see this car in person is smile. And that smile gets even bigger when you drive it. This car is the perfect cruise around car. It is fun to drive and very dependable. And more time than not you will have the only 66 Rebel at the cruise in!!
