The Porsche 911 is most certainly iconic, and like any number of other iconic cars, the ability to mix and match components from various years and models give you the ability to create unique 911s that remain true to their heritage, but stand out from the crowd. This 1976 911S packs a potent 2.7 RS engine, a superb black-over-red color combination, and the famous "whale tail" spoiler out back that makes it instantly recognizable. You can''t argue against the 911''s success. This one, finished in black, is incredibly straight with a known history. Paint is uniformly excellent, done to typically high Porsche standards-for your $18,000 and change in 1976, you definitely got something very special. Porsche experts will also note the chrome-rimmed Euro headlamps that are always a welcome upgrade, and the Carrera RS badge on the engine cover suggests that there is more to this 911 than meets the eye. The red leather interior is superbly preserved and according to the original bill of sale that accompanies the car, fully loaded. The leather Recaro seats remain outstanding, with only modest signs of use, but their condition tells you something more: someone truly loved this car. It''s rare to find 35-year-old leather this supple, giving the interior a very inviting look. Any Porsche fan will find himself right at home behind the wheel, with a complete array of easy-to-read gauges, all of which are fully functional and with the tach front and center. Also note that this 911 carries factory A/C, which was surprisingly effective in 1976. The original Blaupunkt AM/FM/cassette stereo with optional rear speakers is still intact, and you''ll enjoy cruising thanks to a power sunroof on top. Mechanically, this car has been substantially upgraded, making it the ideal candidate for a track-day weapon or shockingly fast street car. Kraftwerk supplied the 2.7RS street motor with all the upgrades: 10.3:1 compression, Nikasil cylinders, Dilavar head studs, Carrera chain tensioners, and a stainless exhaust system. Installed in 1987, it has covered just 32,000 miles since, and if you''re familiar with Porsche engines, you know this one has a long life still ahead of it. K&N "watershield" air filters were fitted atop the 40 IDA 3C Weber carburetors, and it''s rated at a very impressive 250 horsepower. The factory 5-speed is still in place, and the suspension and brakes are in top condition. Proper Fuchs alloys wear right-sized 215/60/15 Bridgestone Potenzas.
