Center stage is this 1949 Dodge Wayfarer 2-door business coupe, dressed in a beautiful red over white. The President of Dodge in 1949 was K.T. Keller, and he took an active interest in the styling of this new body style. It''s hard to say what exactly he contributed himself to the final design, but either way, we''re sure glad he got involved. The end result is nothing short of spectacular. Recently repainted in bold Bright Red, this is a color that really pops. The body is amazingly straight and well presented (especially when there''s so much metal in those big curves). Gaps are well proportioned, and certainly beyond what could have been expected from the factory in ''49 when this one was new. Chrome and trim are in good condition, and in some areas it''s tough to see what''s original and what''s a freshened replacement. You''ll also notice the period Lake Pipes affixed to the bottom of each side of the car, giving it a very historical-hot-rod throwback look. Moving inside, there''s no mistake that this interior is a wonderful place to be. Recently refinished in fresh white cushions, the interior is well-complimented by the red piping and carpeting you see throughout (check out the headliner!). Although much of the trimwork has been retained from the original build, you can see where the current owner was happy to replace what needed to be replaced, and the overall effect is that of a well-built, tastefully finished cruiser that''s ready to impress. Powered comes from a strong Dodge Flathead 6 with single barrel Stromberg carburetor, all bolted to a 3-speed manual transmission, and 3:73 gears out back. This car is not only period correct, but it also represents what a hot rod of this era would have looked like. The engine compartment has a nicely balanced presentation that mixes chrome accents, reproduction OE components and tastefully finished paint detailing. Additional options and accessories include dual chrome mirrors, spot lights, heater, safety rim wheels with full stainless steel wheel covers, fender skirts, WSW tires, a sun shield and much more. Dodge''s slogan of the time was "Ultra Modern" and in its own funny way, that motto still rings true on this one today, all these years later.
